A sports physical is not only a form-signing appointment. It is a focused evaluation of whether an athlete can participate safely and whether an injury, symptom, medication, or health condition needs a plan before the season starts.
The most valuable information often comes from the history. Answers about fainting, chest symptoms, unexplained shortness of breath, prior restrictions, and family heart history deserve careful attention even when the athlete feels well that day.
Bring the right information
- The required school, league, camp, or employer form
- A complete medication and allergy list
- Glasses, contacts, braces, inhalers, or other athletic equipment used for a condition
- Details about past injuries, concussions, surgeries, and restrictions
- Family history of sudden death or serious heart disease at a young age
What the examination may cover
The provider reviews vital signs, general health, heart and lung findings, joints and movement, prior injuries, neurologic concerns, and other areas guided by the form and history. The visit can also identify problems that do not necessarily prevent sports but may need treatment or follow-up.
When an EKG may be appropriate
An electrocardiogram records the heart's electrical activity. It may be considered when the history or examination raises concern, such as exertional fainting, certain chest symptoms, an abnormal heart finding, or a concerning family history. Current U.S. guidance does not recommend routine EKG screening for every athlete.
An EKG is one piece of information and does not rule out every heart condition. An abnormal or unclear result can require repeat testing, an echocardiogram, or cardiology evaluation before clearance is completed.
Schedule before the deadline
Try not to book the day before practice begins. If records are missing or a concern needs follow-up, clearance may not be immediate. BayouSide provides sports, school, camp, employment, and other physicals, with in-office EKG services when clinically appropriate or required.
